Optimizing the Filtration Process: A Three-Stage Solution at Fresh Water Norway
Fresh Water Norway significantly reduced the particle load early in the process line by implementing a three-stage filtration setup. A vertical automatic self cleaning filter from the 90 Series by Forsta Filters was installed as a pre filtration step, followed by enhanced intermediate filtration at 10 micron. The solution was engineered and recommended by Ditech to protect and extend the service life of the final filtration stage, while creating the necessary conditions for stable and efficient UV transmission.
Short version
- Fresh Water Norway upgraded its existing filtration setup to a three stage configuration.
- A vertical automatic self cleaning pre filter combined with 10 micron intermediate filters reduces the particle load earlier in the process.
- The result is a more balanced system load, improved UV transmission, and more predictable filter service intervals.
Further Development to a Three Stage Filtration Setup
Fresh Water Norway already had a well functioning filtration system in place. However, they aimed to strengthen the pre filtration stage in order to reduce the particle load further downstream in the process line.
By capturing a higher share of particles earlier in the process, they were able to:
- Relieve the final filtration stages
- Create improved conditions for stable UV transmission
- Assess the potential for extended filter service intervals
The initiative was not about replacing the existing system, but about optimizing and reinforcing a solution that was already performing well.

Why Choose a Three Stage Filtration Solution?
“To reduce the number of particles passing through the entire line and to minimize the load on the final filtration stages.”

Close Collaboration, Fast Filter Availability and Digital Overview
Beyond the filtration technology itself, availability and follow up are key components of the collaboration. For the customer, rapid access to the correct filters when needed is essential for maintaining operational continuity.
To ensure predictable performance, technical advisory support is combined with:
- Fast delivery when required
- The option to build up local stock
- Close and ongoing dialogue with Ditech
The customer also uses Ditech’s customer portal for filter procurement. Through the customerportal they gain:
- Clear visibility of previous orders
- Access to the correct filter types
- An efficient and streamlined ordering process
The digital access improves purchasing structure and contributes to greater predictability in maintenance planning.
Technical Upgrade of the Filtration Setup
To strengthen the pre filtration stage, a vertical automatic self cleaning filter from the 90 Series by Forsta Filters was installed as the first filtration step in the line. This was followed by enhanced intermediate filtration at 10 micron. Two of these filters were already part of the existing setup, while one additional unit was added to increase overall capacity and performance.
By introducing an additional filtration stage, the following benefits were achieved:
- Earlier particle removal in the process
- More balanced load distribution across the entire filter train
- Reduced stress on the final filtration stage
The solution therefore represents an optimization of the existing setup rather than a complete system replacement.
A three stage filtration solution consists of a coarse filter, an intermediate filter, and a fine filter installed sequentially in the process line. The purpose is to remove particles stepwise according to size, thereby distributing the particle load across multiple filtration stages.
This reduces the burden on the fine filter and contributes to extended service life, more stable maintenance intervals, and improved overall filtration economics.
An automatic self cleaning filter used as a pre filtration step removes the largest particles before they reach filters with replaceable media.
This reduces the particle load in downstream stages, minimizes consumption of filter elements, and results in a more cost efficient and operationally stable solution. At the same time, continuous filtration is maintained without frequent manual intervention.
Yes. By distributing the particle load across multiple filtration stages, the stress on each individual filter is reduced.
This leads to slower differential pressure build up and more predictable service intervals. Proper sizing based on the actual particle load is essential to achieving the expected filter lifetime.
Fast access is ensured through structured filter mapping, safety stock strategies, and close collaboration between the customer and Ditech.
Through the customer portal, users gain visibility of previous purchases, machine associations, and stock status, reducing the risk of incorrect orders and shortening procurement lead time. Access to local Norwegian inventory further strengthens delivery reliability, particularly during periods of global raw material shortages and unstable supply chains.
