What is a self cleaning filter?

What is a self cleaning filter?

A self cleaning filter is a filtration technology that automatically cleans itself using the system’s own water pressure, without the need for manual cleaning. This ensures continuous operation, efficient particle removal, and reduced maintenance requirements. It is a practical solution for industrial, municipal, and irrigation systems.

How does a self cleaning filter work?

Ditech offers self cleaning filtration solutions based on advanced technology that ensures efficient particle removal, reduced maintenance, and continuous operation. A self cleaning filter uses the system’s own water pressure for automatic cleaning, eliminating the need for manual maintenance.

  • Filtration: Water flows through a cylindrical filter screen that captures particles on the inside. Ditech supplies self cleaning filters with various screen types, including perforated plate, wedge wire, and sintered mesh. These filters are available with filtration ratings from 5 to 4,000 microns to meet specific application requirements.
  • Accumulation: As particles gradually build up on the screen, the differential pressure between the filter inlet and outlet is continuously monitored by a control unit. When the pressure reaches a predefined threshold, the cleaning cycle of the self cleaning filter is automatically initiated.
  • Cleaning (backflushing): The control system opens a flush valve, creating a rapid water flow that activates an internal cleaning mechanism. This device functions like a vacuum nozzle, removing accumulated particles from the screen surface. Backflushing in self cleaning filters typically lasts between 5 and 30 seconds and takes place without interrupting the main water flow, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted operation.

Ditech’s self cleaning filtration solutions are ideal for demanding applications where reliable and efficient filtration is critical.

Did you know?

Ditech’s self cleaning filters cover capacities ranging from small to large scale water treatment requirements. We offer solutions with flow rates from 10 litres per minute to several thousand litres per minute, depending on the application. With filtration ratings from 5 to 4,000 microns, systems can be tailored to handle everything from coarse particles to extremely fine filtration demands.

This flexibility makes our solutions ideal for both small scale and large scale applications such as agriculture, industry, and municipal water treatment plants.

How a self cleaning filtration system operates

How does a self cleaning filter work?

In short, a self cleaning filter operates as follows:

  • Filtration: Water flows through a strainer where particles are captured.
  • Monitoring: The system continuously measures the pressure differential between the inlet and outlet.
  • Cleaning: When the pressure increases to a predefined level, the automatic cleaning cycle is activated.
  • Backflushing: Captured particles are removed quickly without interrupting the water flow.
  • The result: Continuous operation, efficient particle removal, and minimal maintenance.

Applications for self cleaning filters

Self cleaning filters are used across a wide range of industries and applications where reliable, continuous filtration is essential. Within industry and technology, they are commonly applied in data centres, wind power installations, and wastewater systems.

  • In the marine & Offshore sector, self cleaning filters are used for applications such as wellboats, ballast water treatment, and seawater filtration.
  • Within water treatment, these filters play a key role in NF and RO pre filtration, MF and UF filtration, and as pre filtration before UV systems.
  • In aquaculture and fish farming, self cleaning filters are widely used in RAS systems to ensure stable water quality and efficient operation.
  • Self cleaning filters are also relevant for the energy and power generation sector, including wind power installations, depending on the application focus.

Benefits and features of Ditech’s self cleaning filters

Efficient particle removal: Ditech’s self cleaning filters remove particles in the range of 5–4,000 microns, with flow rates from 10 gallons per minute (gpm) up to several thousand gpm for larger applications.

Reduced maintenance: The automatic cleaning process eliminates the need for frequent manual cleaning, saving time and reducing operating costs.

Continuous operation: The cleaning cycle does not interrupt the water flow, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted operation.

Versatility: These filters are suitable for a wide range of applications, including industrial processes, irrigation systems, and municipal water filtration.
